An Update on Homework
Reading
- This is an essential activity, ideally your child would get to read to you (Mum, Dad, brother, sister, Granma, Grandad, Auntie, Uncle...) once a day, every day.
- Good strategies to encourage reading include discussing pictures, sounding out letters, breaking up words into smaller parts, you reading stories to your child (they can join in where they are able to), you reading stories which are of interest to your child but which might be beyond their decoding ability at the moment - it gives them something to aim for and a reason to keep on working hard!
Spellings
- Weekly sheet, words to be practised 3 times a week at home.
Maths
- If you want to assist in your child's learning before then please focus on:
- counting forwards and backwards to 100
- Knowing numbers that add to ten (1,9 / 2,8 / 3,7 etc)
- measuring mass/ weight (balancing scales)
- measuring length (using hand spans and then cm)
- measuring capacity (liquids)
Obviously measuring weight and capacity lend themselves nicely to home baking and cooking activities.
